These artists will each present a body of work in an exhibition entitled Louisiana Seven. Museum visitors will be able to view an entire series by these artists. All of these artists currently live in northeast Louisiana, residing either in Grambling, Monroe, or Ruston. City of Monroe Beautification Coordinator Jacqueline January is pleased to announce a partnership between the City of Monroe Beautification Division and Recycling Services, LLC, to allow for the recycling of old phone books.
Beginning Wednesday, June 4th, through Monday, July 7th, the public can drop off old phone books at a designated area in the north parking lot of the Monroe Civic Center Complex.
Beautification Coordinator Jacqueline January comments, "Many citizens have expressed an interest in recycling programs and this is our first one in years. Recycling your old phone book is an easy way to keep unnecessary paper out of our local landfills. Most phone books are made out of 40% recycled materials. This recycling method saves trees and helps preserve our environment. This is another reason to be MONROE PROUD!"

- Ad Club of Northeast Louisiana to present evening of political parody…
Political satire and parody turn the crisis known as Louisianan Politics into a true laughing matter at the 3rd Annual Gridiron Show, Thursday, July 31 at the West Monroe Convention Center. This year’s show – Gridiron: camPAIN ’08 – revives the Holier Than Thou 1st Church Choir with renditions of Blessed Insurance, Amazing Race and Oh, Ba-Ma, My Lord, Oh-Ba-Ma.
Local Superstar News Anchor John Denison, will again report the news that’s not fit for real TV, while rewrites of These Boots are Made for Walkin’, My Favorite Things and yes, Bill Clinton singing the hip-hop favorite Hill’s Got Back are just a few of this year’s show stoppers.
Gridiron: camPAIN ’08 is fashioned after the popular 70’s variety show, Laugh-In, and includes the ever popular one-liner wall of jokes. Be there to witness mistakes that will make the Legislature look sane and state government functional. It is all in good fun and the laughs are on us!
Gridiron: camPAIN ’08 tickets are $50 each and can be purchased at the West Monroe Convention Center. Proceeds benefit the Mal Cooley Scholarship Fund administered by the Advertising Club of Northeast Louisiana. The evening entertainment also includes food and refreshing adult beverages. Doors open at 5:30, show starts at 7:00p.m.

- DIXIE PERFORMING ARTS CAMPS
Last year’s camp was such a huge success, we are offering two camps this year! Four theatre professionals will provide the instruction for each two-week intensive camp.
Mary Fran Crook, Dixie artistic director, is heading up this exciting endeavor. She has a great faculty of theatre and art professionals lined up to share their talents with the students. Each student will participate in theatre classes, dance classes, stage crafts (which will include costume and set design), and music classes (which will include not only vocal coaching, but they will learn how to play a simple instrument). At the end of each camp, parents, friends and the public will be treated to a final performance and cast party.
Many of the 2007 campers have gone on to participate in plays at their schools, churches and particularly with the Ruston Community Theatre. Nancy Diaz, parent of 2007 camper Dinah Diaz, credits the Dixie Performing Arts camp for nurturing and developing her daughter’s drama skills. Dinah has had a successful year at Ruston High School participating in Drama and Speech tournaments around the region. She has won several state awards and has the distinction of competing in the Drama Competition of the National Forensics Tournament in Las Vegas this summer. This is the first time a freshman from Ruston High School has had this honor.
Grandparent of 2007 camper Reba Emory and avid Dixie supporter, Mr. John Emory, Sr., says “This camp exemplifies one of the missions of the Dixie Center for the Arts—to provide educational services to our area children. I feel that Reba thoroughly enjoyed the camp and benefited from the instruction. All of the programs at the Dixie have far exceeded our area’s expectations. This camp proved itself the very first year.” Mr. Emory has been involved with the Dixie Board of Directors in many ways since its formation in 1996. He is also Chairman of the Board of Community Trust Bank.
The first camp, June 16-20 & 23-27, 1-5 pm daily, is for those who have completed 1st-5th grades. As an added bonus to this camp the campers will participate in the La. Peach Festival parade on a float that they will construct. Campers will also have the opportunity to participate in a performance on Sunday, June 29th of the Louisiana Peach Festival during Family Day. The cost for this camp is $200.
The camp for those who have completed 6th-12th grades is July 28-Aug 1 & 4-8, 9am-4pm daily. The cost for this camp is $300.
Both camps are limited to 40 participants each. A non-refundable $50 deposit (goes toward total tuition) will hold a place for the camper. Call the Dixie Center for the Arts to reserve a spot or for more information soon. 318-255-1450 or fax 318-255-1425. Information and application forms are also available on the website www.dixiecenter.org.
